Why the Dhoom 3 Motion Poster got it right

Bollywood has recently discovered Motion poster and this marketing trend is catching up. It is exciting! Earlier, the first glance of any highly awaited movie would be a teaser, now its moved on to a motion poster. A picture is worth a thousand words, so this is a very powerful and effective tool, provided it is used well. The motion poster of the third and latest instalment of the successful Dhoom Franchise (released on August 13th and already crossed 15 lakh views on youtube!) has understood the essence of a motion poster and got it spot on.

Technically superlative. Crisp sound effects of blaring sirens, helicopters, walkie talkie mixed with the rousing background including the signature Dhoom tune. Amazing sound mixing and panning effect across the left and right speakers is great too. And the teriffic sound is blended well with an interesting visual. Pull back from a cloudy, gloomy Chicago sky slowly revealing the back of a formidable anti-hero overlooking the imposing skyline. The experience is akin to decrypting an open-to-intepretation painting at an art exhibition. Its hiding and yet at the same time revealing. You cannot see the villian's face (no brainer it is Aamir Khan) so you can't see his expressions yet you are aware something nefarious and sinister is going on in his mind as he watches over a city like a keen and predatory eagle. And is the sense of chaos a harbinger to an impending catastrophe or the visuals post the disaster. Keeps you guessing. Love the concept of releasing the motion poster before a motion picture. And congrats to yrf team on a fab job. It succeeds in creating the desired impact.
